Ernest Balliol ejer et firma, der sælger okkult materiale. Han befinder sig midt i en bitter strid med Aloysius Wilmington, der ligesom Balliol er medlem af Midsomers Magiske Selskab. Da Wilmington opfører et trylleshow for en gruppe børn, falder hans kvindelige assistent pludselig død om. Nogen har smurt gift på Wilmingtons redskaber, men hvem og hvorfor? Barnaby og Jones går på jagt efter svaret.
